3. Control Panel: The control panel allows operators to activate the CO2 system when needed. It typically includes switches for system activation, pressure indicators, and other control elements.

4. Automatic Fire Detectors: The CO2 system can be connected to automatic fire detectors that detect the presence of fire or smoke. When a fire is detected, the system automatically releases CO2 into the affected area.

5. Operating Principle: When a fire occurs, the CO2 system is activated either manually via the control panel or automatically via fire detectors. Once activated, a valve opens, releasing CO2 from the cylinders into the pipelines and nozzles. The CO2 gas quickly fills the affected area, extinguishing the fire by suffocation, i.e., reducing the oxygen concentration in the space below the level needed to sustain the fire.

It is essential to note that before activating the CO2 system, the area where CO2 is used as the extinguishing agent must be completely sealed to stop the influx of new oxygen into the space.

CO2 systems are effective in extinguishing fires on ships because the gas does not damage electrical equipment or other sensitive components of the ship, unlike water or powder extinguishing agents. However, caution must be exercised when handling CO2 systems, as high concentrations of CO2 can be harmful to humans and require evacuation of the affected area before the system is activated.
